O’ Barren (empty spaces)

Nothing

Just darkness and emptiness

But in the beginning

You sat in the dark didn’t You?

And that’s where You create best

It is “from” darkness that You

Gave us light

So I sat in the darkness

Threatening to swallow me whole

Began to think that death is better than life

You sent Your Son to die didn’t You?

Yes, He died so that I could have eternal life

Death must be good, I thought

As I felt this pain… in my soul

Hurting, like death itself

But hope found it’s way

Into my dark moments

You brought light

In the form of a song

A song that reminded me that

“The Father’s love will never leave you empty”

There my heart found joy

Welcoming the emptiness I had felt

The irony

I must know pain

To appreciate life without it

Maaan how I loathed the process, but still

Believed You to be a God of goodness

Wait

This reminds me of the barren woman

One who had to bear with being

A lonely

Hurt

Broken

Empty

In the dark

Sorrowful

Scorned

Full of questions

A little bitter

Perhaps detesting the act of breathing

Which was necessary

For her to breathe until she conceived

Subsequently being with child

Sigh — I wonder if she felt like me

When she had to exchange the familiar

For what seemed strange

Yet, an answered prayer

I wonder if she too, came to realise

That You were always the same

Even when her heart was heavy

Soul wounded

And it didn’t feel like You’re so good

That even when Your sovereignty hurts

I’ll trust

Like the barren woman who became mother

My soul can be whole

And so

Out of (my) dark moments

As you did from her supposed ruined womb

You bring life

Into these bones

Yes, with light You fill my soul

Between a poem and a prayer, for sure. The kind of words only pain can find

The words you preach are as powerful as the message. I’ve enjoyed reading this piece.

In a world of contrast and polarities, where light can’t exist without darkness, and joy without pain since they are the same thing in either extremes, balance is very essential in our lives. God never gives up on us, sending hope our way and with faith and persistence, We emerge victorious.
